LaBelle Heritage Museum's "Swamp Cabbage Festival" Scenic & Informative Cruises

The 2016 Swamp Cabbage Festival River Cruises A Success!!!

LaBelle Heritage Museum's first foray into sponsoring cruises on the Caloosahatchee River during the 50th Anniversary of the Swamp Cabbage Festival were an unqualified success...notwithstanding the chilly weather for the 8:30am cruise.  All four cruises on Saturday February 27th 2016 were sold out well in advance; although, a few lucky people did manage to be in line for the very few advance cancellations we received.

We booked Captain John Cookman's M/V "River Queen" pontoon vessel  for the day and scheduled four approximately two-hour cruises between 8:30am & 4pm. With the expert guidance of Captain John the vessel explored the current river north & south of the LaBelle bridge & into some of the original "oxbow" sections of the Caloosahatchee so our guests could see how the river once was.

Each individual cruise had a different speaker guide to help explain & answer questions regarding the history, wildlife, natural resources & local heritage of this unique area of Hendry County:  Scott Cooper, local educator and "river rat"; was joined by Margaret England, award winning president of the Hendry-Glades Audubon Society;  Amy Bennett Williams, well known story teller;  News-Press columnist and author of "Along the Caloosahatchee"; and Joe Thomas, local historian and LaBelle Heritage Museum president.

Volunteer students under the guidance of Professor Sandra Seifert, advisor of the Beta Tau Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at FSW State College's Hendry/Glades Center in LaBelle helped throughout the day with the loading & unloading of passengers & docking the vessel. Our thanks to everyone involved who helped make this a great experience for all.

Due to the overwhelming good response ....Current plans are to repeat the cruises for the 2017 Swamp Cabbage Festival and schedule excursions for both Saturday Feb 25th and Sunday Feb 26th.

Our hope is that with your support & the efforts of our volunteers the LaBelle Heritage Museum's Caloosahatchee River Excursions will become a mainstay of the annual Swamp Cabbage Festival for many years to come....
